Realistic material characterization

NANOTEST has pioneered the development of the Advanced-Mixed-Mode Bending (AMB) Testing Device, ensuring precise and rapid evaluation of interface properties.

Accurate mixed-mode fracture mechanical data is imperative for successful reliability design. Particularly for interfaces, obtaining fracture toughness data can be challenging, given its dependence on processing conditions, loading angles, and loading rates.

The AMB tester stands out as the sole testing equipment capable of consistently handling small samples, such as those directly cut from the package itself, without the need for gluing or clamping. To eliminate transfer effects, the tester interacts with the sample solely through compression. This approach necessitates only two samples to characterize each angular branch of the energy release rate curve, thus maximizing the utility of available samples.

Key Features:

  • Device designed to test mixed-mode adhesion strength of bi-material interfaces
  • Specimen-centered design accommodates artificial and product-origin samples
  • Two independent actuators cover a broad range of mode-mixity in a single test
  • Optical observation facilitates monitoring delamination progress during tests
  • Crack tip detection enabled by Digital Image Correlation (DIC)
  • Finite Element calculations derive critical energy release rates using test parameters and loading data

Advantages of AMB

  • Direct use of specimens from the production line, including package-sized samples, ensuring 100% process representation
  • Significantly reduced measurement time compared to alternative methods
  • Ability to generate a Gc (ψ) curve with a minimum of two specimens
  • Standardizes fracture mechanics as a fundamental tool in system design
